The closest finish in LA Marathon history

This past Sunday, Nathan Martin spent most of the LA Marathon watching someone else lead.

For mile after mile, Kenya’s Michael Kamau set the pace.

Then something shifted.

With the finish line in sight, Martin dug into a reserve most men never find.

Not with desperation, with intention. Calm. Locked in.

He crossed the finish line first by 0.44 seconds.

That is the closest finish in LA Marathon history.

After the race, he said it plainly:

“I always challenge myself to push regardless of if there’s someone to chase or I’m all by myself. I want to know I finished giving it everything I’ve got. You can’t always win, but you can always push.”

That’s the whole point right there.

His drive wasn’t about Kamau. It was never about Kamau. The external race was just the setting. The real race, the one that mattered, was internal.

That’s antifragile. Not performing for the crowd. Not chasing someone else’s pace. Knowing your standard and holding it regardless.
